Creating an Inclusive Community: º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½dent Laura George Interns with L’Arche Fredericton
Fourth-year º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½dent Laura George from Windsor, NS, found a sense of community and growth through her internship with L’Arche Fredericton.
“I have met so many wonderful people through my internship, and every day I go to work, I feel like I’ve grown a little bit more,” said George.
The Psychology and Fine Arts º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½dent is a program coordinator for the organization, facilitating activities for adults with intellectual disabilities (core members) to encourage development of relationships, new skills, and general well-being.
“The most rewarding aspects of my job are the moments spent with the core members. It's fulfilling to see everyone leave with a smile after our time together," she said.
Psychology and Fine Arts provides “highly relevant” for internship
George credits her success in her internship to her Psychology and theatre classes.
“Studying psychology has greatly equipped me with an understanding of the individuals I work with. My Fine Arts courses, particularly in theatre, have provided me with valuable skills in communication and creative expression,” said George.
“These skills have proven highly relevant in my role, as everyone communicates and expresses themselves differently. Establishing a welcoming and supportive environment is crucial to building a sense of community.”
Advice for º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½dents
George encourages students to seize the opportunities the º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ internship Program offers.
“I would absolutely recommend the º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Internship Program to other students! It opens learning opportunities students otherwise might not have access to, and the flexibility is designed to work well with the student schedule,” she said.
“I love that I am allowed the space to make mistakes, learn, and grow.”
