º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Campus Ministry, in partnership with the Fredericton Public Library, is providing one-on-one tutoring sessions to assist individuals in earning their General Education Development (GED) diploma.

Ethan Nylen, a fourth-year º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½dent, is leading and coordinating the program, which is being funded by the Canadian Catholic Ministry Grant.

“This seemed like a practical need º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ was well equipped to serve. We have many bright students with good study habits,” Nylen said.

Serving the Community through Education and Volunteerism

As leader of the Program, Nylen is responsible for creating training materials, directing, training and recruiting tutors, as well as advertising and managing relations with community members.

“Not only does this program serve a practical purpose, but it’s a point of pride and provides an honest chance for them to earn their GED.”

Nylen’s time at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½—and opportunities like this one—have equipped him with knowledge and hands-on learning experience.

The skills he’s gained have also helped cultivate his sense of social responsibility and the desire to use his knowledge to make a difference.

“Charity is the most choice-worthy to me because it’s a good habit to put other’s needs before your own. I’m learning to minister to the practical needs of my community, by using the skills I’ve acquired as a student and Writing Centre Tutor at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½.”

º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ Campus Minister Claire Morrison stressed the importance of embracing new challenges through volunteering opportunities, which is a core component of º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½’s education model.

When students volunteer like this, they must surpass themselves. It takes great courage and openness to vulnerability and failure. Volunteering helps us grow in compassion, which is an education beyond the classroom,” she said.
