Message from the President on the Passing of Professor Brian Carty

I am deeply sorry to inform you of the passing of Professor Brian Carty from the injuries he suffered in a car accident over the weekend.

Brian was a much respected and admired professor who was held in high regard by students and faculty in the School of Social Work and indeed by the whole university community. He was a friendly and uplifting presence on our campus whether you worked with him closely or only occasionally.  He had an infectious, positive personality and always brightened the day of those he came into contact with—he will be greatly missed by everyone at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ and by many alumni.

Brian was an alumnus, earning his BSW at º¬Ð߲ݴ«Ã½ before earning a Master’s in Social Work from Carleton.  Before joining the School of Social Work, he had significant professional counseling experience in employment and career exploration for youth and adults. He specialized in cross-cultural work, crisis counseling, and work with non-profit agencies, and his research interests were in social action and the non-profit sector.

We will share information on the plans for a funeral/memorial service once they are finalized by the family.

Counselling Available

As a reminder, we have reserved room 206 in Brian Mulroney Hall as a space for students to connect with each other, access resources, and process this difficult news.  All this week, from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm, there will be a counsellor available in that room, as well as light snacks and refreshments. Individual counselling and support services are available for students. They can call 453-4820 to make an appointment.

If faculty or staff members wish to access support services, the EFAP program has a counsellor in room 302 in Brian Mulroney Hall today.  Please contact Lori Orchard (lorchard@stu.ca) in Human Resources for more information.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Brian’s partner, Anne Charlebois, his sons, Alex and Ian, and their families.
